In automotive original-finish coatings, automotive refinish, and vehicle paint systems, a consistent pattern is encountered: when a vehicle has just been sprayed, gloss is high and the mirror effect is excellent — but after a period of use, the finish surface progressively develops haze, misting, reduced clarity, and the overall surface quality noticeably deteriorates.
In many cases, this is not caused by problems during clearcoat application. It is the result of environmental factors, ageing, and clearcoat surface performance acting together during long-term use, causing the finish to gradually lose its original gloss and clarity.
When the vehicle has just been sprayed: the surface is bright and flat, the mirror effect is evident, and appearance is excellent. These characteristics only indicate good initial flow and gloss — they cannot guarantee the same effect will be maintained after extended use.
During long-term parking or driving: UV rays act continuously, high temperature acts repeatedly, and the film continuously ages. Over time, the clearcoat surface layer gradually changes, affecting light reflection, making the finish look progressively hazier.
During daily use — washing, dust particles, wind and sand — large numbers of micro-scratches invisible to the naked eye form on the finish surface. As these accumulate, light undergoes diffuse reflection and haze becomes progressively apparent.
Beyond providing gloss, the clearcoat also serves the important function of protecting the colour coat. If clearcoat weatherability is insufficient, anti-ageing capability is weak, or surface stability declines, gloss loss and hazing are more likely to appear after extended use.
During long-term outdoor exposure: acid rain, bird droppings, tree resin, and industrial pollutants all act continuously on the film surface. If not cleaned promptly, they may further accelerate clearcoat ageing, making haze more pronounced.
When the vehicle is new: the clearcoat structure is intact, surface flatness is high, and light reflection is uniform. As use time increases: the film gradually ages, micro-scratches continuously accumulate, and surface flatness declines. The originally sharp mirror effect slowly becomes blurred.
Haze affects vehicle appearance and also signals that the clearcoat surface's protective capability is gradually declining. If it continues to develop: gloss declines further, the finish accumulates soiling more easily, and chalking, cracking, and other ageing phenomena may eventually appear.
Progressive clearcoat haze during use is fundamentally the combined result of UV ageing, micro-scratch accumulation, environmental contamination, and clearcoat weatherability. When improving automotive clearcoat haze problems, in addition to focusing on application process, clearcoat weatherability, scratch resistance, the additive system, and daily maintenance approach must all be comprehensively considered to improve long-term finish gloss and durability.
