In epoxy resins and high-performance industrial coatings, carbon black and organic pigments have large specific surface areas and a strong tendency to agglomerate. If dispersion is insufficient, not only is colour development affected — grinding time also increases, production efficiency decreases, and the storage stability of the colour paste is compromised. Why Longer Grinding Alone Is Not the Answer
Increasing grinding time or mechanical shear can improve dispersion to some degree, but readily increases energy consumption and production cost, and the improvement for high-surface-area carbon black is often limited. By contrast, using a wetting dispersant to reduce pigment agglomeration and improve de-flocculation efficiency is more effective at improving grinding efficiency and colour paste stability.
